The video for the album’s lead single, made its premiere on American Idol and was filmed in Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert over three days in April, the Francis Lawrence-directed video boasts a cast of over 200 dancers, a menagerie of exotic animals and Beyoncé as the leader of a stunning army of women. “Best Thing I Never Had” was released as the album’s second single. The song premiered on US radio on June 1, 2011, and was released for digital download the same day.
Inspired by a diverse range of influences, from Fela Kuti to Debarge to Adele, this fourth full length solo release is her most diverse yet. The 60+ songs recorded for the album have been whittled down to the 12 that make up 4. This collection of very personal tracks reveals an artist who is unafraid to take chances.
